In a significant step towards combating cervical cancer, SHE Safety and Health Initiative, in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Aiyetoro Primary Health Center Yaba, and the World Safety Organization, successfully conducted a two-day free cervical cancer screening event held at the Aiyetoro Primary Health Center in Yaba, Lagos. The NGO provided vital cervical screenings, breast cancer examinations, general health assessments, health education to over 100 women, reinforcing the urgent need for early detection and prevention.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n

The initiative, themed \u201cCervical Health Matters, Prevention through Awareness,\u201d aimed to combat the rising cases of cervical cancer by promoting early detection, preventive care, and increased awareness.<\/p>\n

The screening event, held on January 30 and 31, 2025, featured a series of activities, including Health Talks & Awareness Sessions, where Medical professionals provided crucial information on cervical cancer, risk factors, and prevention.  Women received essential screenings to detect precancerous conditions while  women with abnormal test results were referred to partner hospitals for further diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n

A key outcome of the event was the detection of one fully developed case of breast cancer, emphasising the urgent need for regular health checks among women. Several other participants were identified with possible precancerous cervical conditions and were advised to seek further medical evaluation.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the impact of the initiative, the CEO of SHE Safety and Health Initiative, Mabel Onaiwu reaffirmed the organisation\u2019s commitment to prioritising women\u2019s health and ensuring accessibility to preventive healthcare services.<\/p>\n

\"SHE<\/a><\/a><\/div>\n

“Too many women die from preventable diseases due to lack of awareness, financial barriers, and fear. This initiative is not just about screening; it is about giving women a chance at early detection and saving lives,” she stated.<\/p>\n

She further urged stakeholders, healthcare providers, and policymakers to intensify efforts in cancer prevention and accessible healthcare for women in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

Despite the success of the screening programme, several challenges were noted, including:<\/p>\n

 High demand for screenings, surpassing available resources.<\/p>\n

The need for financial aid for women requiring further medical care.<\/p>\n

A lack of widespread awareness on cervical and breast cancer prevention.<\/p>\n

To address these challenges, the SHE Safety and Health Initiative plans to expand future screening programmes, strengthen medical partnerships, and secure additional funding to sustain and scale up its impact.<\/p>\n

As part of its ongoing commitment to women\u2019s health, SHE Initiative will:<\/p>\n

Continue its awareness campaigns on cervical and breast cancer.<\/p>\n

Offer follow-up support to women diagnosed with health concerns.<\/p>\n

Advocate for more funding and partnerships to sustain free screening initiatives.<\/p>\n

The organisation encourages more women to prioritise their health by participating in routine screenings and urges the public to support initiatives that promote early detection and prevention.<\/p>\n
