Over 200 teenage girls at Okota Junior High School experienced a life-changing event as the SHE Safety and Health Initiative organised a comprehensive workshop on personal safety and health practices. The initiative, which aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 4 and 5, provided the girls with crucial skills to navigate safety challenges and embrace healthier lifestyles.
Teenage girls often face heightened risks due to limited access to safety education, health knowledge, and practical skills that prepare them for emergencies or life-threatening situations. This gap leaves many young girls vulnerable, with limited confidence to make informed decisions about their well-being.
However, SHE Safety and Health Initiative has stepped in to bridge this gap by creating workshops that deliver impactful, hands-on training tailored to the realities of these young girls’ lives.
The event began with reflections from senior school girls who had participated in a similar programme during the International Day of the Girl Child. Their testimonials highlighted how the lessons learned had made them more self-aware and equipped to handle challenges, this sparked a sense of anticipation and enthusiasm among the junior school participants.
Key sessions included a lecture on personal safety and health practices by the Founder/CEO
SHE Safety and Health Initiative, Mabel Abel-Onaiwu, who focused on empowering the girls to recognise risks and make choices that protect their physical and emotional well-being.
Also, First Aid Nigeria delivered a powerful lecture coupled with practical demonstrations, ensuring the girls left with life-saving skills to respond to emergencies effectively.
In addition, a photography session by SOL Media Bridge introduced the girls to photography as a tool for self-expression and potential income generation, broadening their horizons and confidence in their capabilities.
Many of the girls while speaking with the media team shared how the workshops made them feel more empowered to take control of their safety and health, dispelling fears and replacing them with confidence and practical solutions while expressing joy, gratitude, and excitement about the knowledge they had gained.
The CEO extended her heartfelt gratitude to God and everyone who contributed to the success the event. She acknowledged the efforts of the volunteers, passionate supporters, and esteemed partners for their efforts, resources, and encouragement that made the event a remarkable success.
